If you are interested
in adopting a herding dog from AHDR, the first step is to fill out and return
an Adoption Application or you can contact Velleta
Scott via e-mail at vtscott@cox.net
or by phone 479-267-0018 for an application to be sent to you. If calling, please
leave a message with your name, city, state and home and work phone numbers.
Please be sure to include your area code.
The adoption application helps us find the best match between you and the dogs
we have available. It gives the AHDR volunteers an idea of what kind of dog
would suit you (active, quiet, younger, older, good with kids, good with cats,
etc.) Then, after a representative has reviewed your application, you will be
contacted to set up a home visit with a representative of AHBR and to discuss
any dogs we have available. Arkansas Herding Dog Rescue, Inc. volunteers pride
themselves on their thorough screening process. They screen both adoptive homes
and adoptable dogs carefully, so adopters should be prepared to answer many
questions about their lifestyles and desires for a dog. AHBR does, however,
reserve the right to refuse an applicant.
Also, please keep in mind when inquiring about adopting a dog that AHBR does
not ship dogs to people sight unseen. Once approved for adoption, and if a good
match is found, potential adopters are required to come to where the dogs are
located to meet them in person before deciding whether or not to adopt. This
is not only in the best interest of the dogs but for the adopters as well,
and we appreciate your consideration and understanding on this matter.
Rescue volunteers also hear about purebreds in area shelters. If a dog that
matches your request turns up in a shelter, the AHBR volunteer will refer you
to the shelter. You would then have to be approved by the shelter and would
adopt directly from the shelter. If you are referred to a dog in the shelter,
please respond as soon as possible as time is often short for shelter dogs.
Adopters are under no obligation to accept any dog referred by AHBR, Inc. If
you feel a dog is not right for you, simply tell the AHBR volunteer. Adopters
should expect to spend some time working with the rescue volunteer in order
to find the best dog for their requirements. When you and the right dog find
each other, AHBR, Inc. has an adoption contract for you to sign. Copies of the
adoption contract and the dogs medical paperwork will be given to you
at the time of the adoption.
When adopting a dog that is in our foster care, Arkansas Herding Breed Rescue,
Inc. does charge an adoption fee. These adoption fees enable us to continue
rescuing and placing herding dogs. AHBR, Inc. is a non-profit public benefit
corporation and run solely by adoption fees and donations. Dogs who are not
in our foster care but are in our listings from private owners will be placed
for free. The owners may only ask for the cost of spaying or neutering the dog
in order to be eligible for our listings. Donations to Arkansas Herding Dog
Rescue, Inc. are always appreciated.
